Is That What We're All Eating?

I bought some appetizing looking shrimp ceviche the other day in a national chain store. My husband and I had it for dinner and I will admit it was absolutely delicious. My husband has no food issues such as allergies or intolerances to anything; I on the other hand, am lactose, gluten, and msg intolerant. I woke up in the middle of the night with a brutal migraine headache.

Now I should have known better because I always read labels before I buy any foods, and especially considering my food allergies. In fact I suspect there are many many people out there who walk around on a daily basis suffering with headaches, depression, aches and pains, constipation, lethargy, stomach aches - I could go on and on. They can't seem to figure out why they don't feel better. I would assume most of these people have a problem with the foods they are eating and in most cases are completely unaware of their tendencies toward these kind of problems.

Because I am so interested in how food affects us, I googled every single ingredient on the label. What I found should wake us all up! In addition to the shrimp, lime, salt and pepper, the following were listed on the label:

Natural flavors - an alias for MSG. Generally a combination of gases and/or chemicals which are used to enhance the flavoring of a food to make it more palatable.

Sodium benzoate - a preservative, an antiseptic used in the dye industry.

Sodium sulfite - chemical used as a preservative especially in dried fruits and wines. Also used in the dye and oil industries. This is an extremely high allergen and can cause headaches in those who have an intolerance for this additive.

Sodium metabisulfite - a chemical preservative some of whose side effects include developmental/reproductive toxicity, some cancers, inability of organs to metabolize it so it builds up in your body causing untold damage after many years. Also a lung irritant.

Corn syrup - used as a preservative in many foods and can lead to gastrointestinal disorders, body cannot metabolize it so it turns into fat. High fructose corn syrup has been banned in many European countries because of its dangers to your system. It is generally made from genetically modified corn.

Potassium sorbate - a salt used to increase and preserve shelf life. Also used to prevent mold and microbes.

Sodium erythorbate - a food additive used to stabilize color and to improve flavor stability.

The above ingredients should give all of us an idea of the detrimental additives in the foods we choose to eat and what they can do our systems if we continue along this unhealthy eating path. Keep in mind these toxins are not metabolized in our bodies, which means they build up over a period of time causing untold damage to all of our major organs. This could be one of the reasons why 75% of Americans will have one or more degenerative diseases by the time they reach the age of 65!

Let's stop this slow build up of all these poisons in our systems and make the choice to live a healthier lifestyle.

One of My Favorite People

When I went to grade school – longer ago than I like to admit – we always talked about “the 3 R’s”. They were “reading, riting, and rithmetic” to take poetic license.

However in today’s climate, I believe we need to add another “R” to that mix. And that would be RESPONSIBILITY. It’s a word as well as a meaning that has seemed to elude many people today especially as regards behavior, conduct, and performance. Too many people seem to seize the quick fix type of solution to their problems without even realizing the end results of their actions.

Since the focus in my speeches and in the way I live my life is on taking that responsibility, I identify with those who view life in a similar manner and who also inspire me. These would be people who have chosen that accountability is a primary virtue in the way they live their life. Let’s take that a little further and focus on those who have taken the responsibility for their health and well being.

One of the people who comes to mind immediately is Mike Huckabee, the former governor of the State of Arkansas. Governor Huckabee realized that at age 42, he not only had diabetes but was also overweight to the tune of over 100 pounds. After his doctor told him he may very well be living the last decade of his life, he knew he had to take some very immediate action.

So how does the average person react when facing these types of situations? Do they take the attitude that they’ll start “tomorrow” or maybe check out weight altering surgery, or perhaps buy one of those diet plans where your daily eating regimen is replaced by “food” that you buy on a weekly basis. Those diet plans are completely inconsistent with continuing good health and as far as that surgery, well, I’m not so sure the statistics are completely in on the successes and/or failures of such options in terms of both short term and long term reviews.

So what did Mr. Huckabee do? Well you guessed it - he chose the high road – he took that responsibility. He realized that if he started a walking program and added more nutritious food to his daily regimen, he could achieve some amazing results! And look what happened; he lost that excess weight and the diabetes disappeared! No short cut irresponsible solutions for him. I would imagine Mr. Huckabee is rather proud of what he did since he resolutely chose prevention rather than intervention. Raise the flag and sound the drums for Governor Huckabee (as well as that electric guitar)!

Weight issues have long since ceased to become just a matter of vanity. We seem to have misplaced the idea that overweight, obesity, and inactivity are our personal responsibility. They are markers for serious illness and premature death. Medical science now realizes that the 65% of overweight and obese people in this country will have increasing health and illness problems with each passing year, if they do not have them already. That extra fat not only increases the incidence of the insidious diseases that currently plague Americans, but that fat also prevents absorption and utilization of the valuable vitamins and minerals we gain from our food and daily supplements.

If you want to control your health, and continue with healthiness as the years go by, and you want that enthusiasm and energy in your life on a daily basis, and how about that weight loss - then taking the responsibility to do just that becomes of paramount importance. So to people like Mike Huckabee, I say, you are an inspiration not only to me but to thousands of others as well.

So because he pulled out all the stops and did what he had to do – in other words acted with responsibility rather than engaging in a quick fix to control his health - and his future wellbeing - Mike Huckabee moves to the top of the list as one of my favorite people!

Do You Have An MSG Allergy?

Are you on the back side of feeling well sometimes after that wonderful meal you just thoroughly enjoyed? Sometimes do painful aches seem to overtake your body for no apparent reason? Has on occasion, your thinking become somewhat fuzzy? If you have experienced some or all of the above issues, perhaps you, like so many others are experiencing the menacing consequences of consuming food containing MSG.

Just what is MSG? It is a flavor enhancer made from either seaweed or soybeans. It produces a chemical reaction in your brain which can cause an addiction to some of the foods you eat, and there are those scientists who claim that it is actually a poisonous product for your system. Incidentally it does contain large amounts of gluten, so for those of you who do know that you are gluten intolerant, you must stay far, far away from any food containing MSG.

But herein lies the problem. Just what foods do contain MSG? Well, that’s not so easy to define. The prevailing opinion about this dangerous product was that it could only be found in Chinese food. Not so anymore. Because of its ability to act on your brain and thus, largely enhance the flavors in foods, most manufacturers use it to some extent. It can be found in almost all manufactured food products – processed foods, processed meats, cereals, canned soups, baked goods, drinks, candy, chewing gum – in other words almost everything we eat. That’s why the program I exist on – largely fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, fish, beans, olive oils – is so healthy. It contains no MSG.

Incidentally, there have been over 115 papers written to date by scientists all over the world claiming there is a correlation between the usage of MSG and the obesity problem that is so persistent! There is some food for thought!

MSG advocates who claim that there is nothing wrong with the use of this product must be asked one question. If it is so unhealthy for you, why does it masquerade under some 40 different names? Names like e.g., hydrolyzed vegetable protein, beef extract, textured protein, yeast nutrient, hydrolyzed corn gluten, etc. When reading labels, often if you cannot pronounce the item or you don’t know what it is, chances are it may be just another hidden term for MSG, and must be put back on the shelf.

So the next time you are get a severe or throbbing headache, dizziness, pin-prick sensations, jaw or throat tightness, or upper back tightness, or various aches and pains after you eat (symptoms actually may not show up for as long as 48 hours after eating these products which makes it even more difficult to realize), think about it. You may have an MSG intolerance and should consider looking a little more closer at what you are eating. Walking around not feeling well is not an option I want to consider and I’m sure you do not either!

Please email me at max-2223@hotmail.com for your thoughts, comments, and questions on the above. I will get back to you.

We All Want To Be Liked and Loved, but..............

We All Want To Be Liked and Loved, but..............

It’s part of the human condition that we all want to be liked and loved….. however, did you ever stop to consider that the foods we eat should like us and more important, should love us!This is an extremely significant point to consider when eating and one that is probably overlooked or not even given a second thought. If you subscribe to the saying “You Are What You Eat”, then you need to be aware of the foods that love you and subsequently the ones that don’t.

For instance, I would love to have a mouth watering hot fudge sundae with wonderful whipped cream and one of those sugary sweet cherries on top at least once a week. Or I would love to come home twice a week or so to a lovely rare steak with a baked potato filled with butter and sour cream. And then top that off with that American favorite – warm apple pie and ice cream. Or on the other nights, how about some southern fried chicken with mashed potatoes. I would be in heaven! Well maybe heaven is where I would be sooner than I might want if that’s my routine!

But hold on! Wait a minute! Listen up! Let’s stop and think rationally and reasonably about this. Even though I may love those foods – let’s face it folks – those foods not only don’t love me, I would say they hate me, they despise me. And just why is that? Well for openers, those foods contain those unspeakably bad fats, various chemicals, food colorings, food preservatives, etc., that clog your arteries, that after years of consuming them could put you in front of the line for heart attacks, strokes, and all the other insidious diseases we know about. And how about that extra fat around your middle that these kind of foods will produce? How about the fact that your insides will not reflect your biological age, but instead will indicate an age a lot older than you might realize because of these unhealthy foods.

I’m not saying you can never consume some of these types of foods. Of course you may have them occasionally. However, what I’m advocating is you must consume basically your fruits, vegetables, grains, good proteins such as fish, the good fats such as are found in avocados and nuts. These foods truly do like you and love you and this will be reflected in the energy you will feel, the good sleep you will have, the absence of aches and pains – in other words good sound energetic health.....and healthy weight loss!So considering we all want to be liked and loved, give that food you put into your body a second look and make sure you are really associating with things that fill those needs. Your body will certainly thank you for that decision and it will love you in return!

I would love your feed back. Please email your comments to: max-2223@hotmail.com

Hippocrates on Exercise

Hippocrates said “Walking is Man’s Best Medicine”

I have always been in awe of the amazing knowledge and wisdom that has come down through the ages from such brilliant people as Hippocrates and the likes of him. After all Hippocrates was born in 450 BC and like other intellects also born thousands of years ago, obviously did not have the access to that wealth of information we now have on the internet or the vast library of books that even intellects had a little earlier in recent history to facilitate their research.

Nonetheless, Hippocrates without benefit of additional knowledge, was able to put forth the information as quoted above. A lot of his theories on healthy living have been corroborated by recent studies regarding the benefits of exercise. Some medical researchers have now listed exercise as the number one factor in continuing good health even before the foods we eat!

For instance research shows that people with various stages of depression show marked improvement when maintaining a consistent plan of exercise such as walking. Further studies show that exercise affords many more benefits such as the few that I will mention here.

How about helping with weight loss, improving the oxygen flow to our bodies, a drug-free approach to helping lower blood pressure, helps boost your good cholesterol and lower your bad cholesterol, strengthens your heart and lungs, and promotes better sleep to name just a few benefits of this inexpensive, easy to do approach to better health.

If you are reading this blog you obviously realize the vast importance of taking care of your body. Consequently, the next time you tell yourself that you’ll start walking tomorrow, remember people like Hippocrates who somehow knew in their infinite wisdom that exercise will not only help to improve your overall health, but will continue to aid in maintaining a vastly improved lifestyle.

You may reply to this blog by emailing Max at max-2223@hotmail.com. Your comments are greatly appreciated. Please send this on to your friends since everybody needs to consider exercise on a daily basis!

My Favorite Things

My Favorite Things

“RAINDROPS ON ROSES AND WHISKERS ON KITTENS” – I’m sure you remember that melodic song “My Favorite Things” from the classic picture “The Sound of Music”. These days some of my favorite things seem to fall into the category of good sound healthy foods. And I would like to share some of them with you.

For instance, peanut butter, one of my all time favorite snack foods. You have to understand that not all peanut butters are created equal. Some of the more popular peanut butters, in fact the two most popular ones that our children consume, contain sugar. And not only one kind of sugar – but sometimes more than one including that completely unhealthy kind – high fructose corn syrup! These ingredients will help to generate sugar addiction that could last over a lifetime! These two foods also contain that very unhealthy hydrogenated vegetable oil. So from experience over the years, I buy Laura Scudder’s peanut butter which contains nothing but peanuts. They even offer one with no added salt! So make sure you read those labels and buy peanut butter that contains only peanuts. Makes eating peanut butter not only a delicious treat but a healthy one as well!

Take a favorite breakfast of mine - cereals. When looking at cereals, it becomes an enormous effort just to find one that doesn’t include all those ingredients that I cannot even spell. I always figure that if I cannot spell them (and I’m a world class speller, folks), then I shouldn’t eat them since I don’t know what in the world they contain and in the process how they will affect my well being in the long run. One of my favorite cereals I have trusted for some time because of the healthy ingredients they offer are cereals made by Kashi. What makes them so appealing to me is the fact that unlike many other popular cereals, they contain none of the various sugars including the aforementioned high fructose corn syrup. Notably what else is missing is the addition of BHT which is used as a preservative. I know it makes the shelf life longer, but I wonder what it does to your insides! Again that sinister hydrogenated vegetable oil shows up in many cereals on the market. So if cereal is included in one of your favorite things – look carefully at what you buy.

How about crackers! You’ve got to be very careful here not to buy the ones containing too much salt, the wrong fats, the sugars, etc. I buy Mary’s Gone Crackers which come in about 5 different flavors including herb and cracked pepper. Being gluten intolerant, and I suspect many people are and do not realize it, this is quite a pleasing crunchy cracker. Spread cheese and a good mustard on one of these and you’re in cracker heaven!
So if some of your favorite things fall into the category of food, make sure that your body will also consider it a favor to eat them….and enjoy them healthfully!

Keeping in The Pink

Keeping in The Pink

Do You Keep in the Pink? This is a phrase that was originally used to describe the skin of a newborn baby. That newborn baby skin is pink and is considered so healthy. And no matter what our age, we all want to consider ourselves in good shape and in the pink of condition. There are many ways to “keep in the pink” and I have described many of them in my book “Reaching for 100”.

I have listed a couple for you to get started on that road to wellness and energetic living. For instance, are you drinking enough water? Or look at it this way – what else do you drink? Do you drink soda? Do you drink a lot of juice? Do you drink a lot of coffee or those coffee drinks that contain such large amounts of calories that you wonder why you cannot lose weight? I drink at least six glasses of water daily; I have my two cups of coffee in the morning, I drink probably at least two large cups of green tea every day, I drink tomato or vegetable juice sometimes and occasionally I will have a glass of red wine with my dinner. This is one of the ways that I keep in the pink.

Fruits and vegetables – at least five servings a day. These are considered nature’s antibiotics – so you can imagine how nicely they will keep you in the pink.

How about exercise – do you get your thirty minutes of brisk walking or treadmill walking, or bike riding, or running on a daily basis. That exercise is so important for many reasons. Just to name a few – keeps your heart pumping, keeps the oxygen at optimum levels, keeps your skin healthy, keeps your brain functioning efficiently, helps repair your cells, and of course, is a primary aid in keeping your weight levels where they should be. So consider all or at least some of the above when you contemplate just what keeps you healthy and in the pink of condition.

Do You Cherry Pick?

Actually let's not only pick the cherries, but all the other fruits and vegetables as well. Since you are reading this, you must be interested in better health, better energy, living that longer more energetic life. So let’s get with the program - let's pick and consume all of nature's antibiotics - namely, those fruits and vegetables.

I found that almost immediately (say three days) after I changed my "diet" to include not only all of the above, but the other healthy foods as well, and of course by cutting out the unhealthy items such as the foods containing all that sugar, salt, and the bad fats, that my life changed dramatically as far as energy, mood, feeling of good health and of course that brass ring we are all looking for – WEIGHT LOSS! I talk about all of this in my book "Reaching for 100".

Look at it this way – if you are consuming more fruits and vegetables, you’ll not have the room to eat the other types of foods, i.e., the unhealthy ones. You will be able to fill up more easily on the more beneficial nourishing foods your body needs.

So cherry picking is a good thing – just remember to gather up the rest!

A Spoonful of Sugar Doesn't Makes The Medicine Go Down

A Spoonful of Sugar Doesn't Makes The Medicine Go Down

You remember that great song from Mary Poppins. Well we know now that a spoonful of sugar not only doesn't make the medicine go down, it's probably one of the worst things you can do for your body!

This is what happens when that refined white sugar enters your body. Because all of the nutrients have been stripped out of the sugar before it is packaged, you are ingesting empty calories. There is absolutely no nutritional value to that sugar. And unfortunately, we know that sugar is found in so many foods that we eat - not only the obvious such as all those baked goods, processed foods, ice creams, etc. - but foods like peanut butter, breakfast cereals, sauces, and almost everything we find on our market’s shelves.

So your body has a dilemma when it encounters all that sugar that we eat since in order for it to be digested, your body must rely on various stored nutrients in order for the digestive process to take place. Some of these stored nutrients are those that protect your immune system. So you are actually removing tools that nature put there in order to protect, nourish, and keep your body from disease. Allowing the use of these nutrients in this dangerous manner will most certainly alter your body’s ability to continue to defend and safeguard it.

So think twice about all that sugar you are eating. Not only will it add those extra unwanted pounds, but it could compromise your health as well!

Recipe of the Day

I made a wonderful shake for breakfast with the following ingredients:
Soy milk
Dash of cinnamon
small amount of honey
handful of broccoli
handful of celery
handful of mango & blueberries
small banana (gives you the potassium & magnesium we all need!)
tbsp of flaxseed oil
small amount of ground flaxseeds

Blend together & enjoy!

Soda & your health

Do you ever wonder why doctors and nutritionists are forever begging you not to drink soda. Well for openers, if you take vitamins, soda will leach many of those valuable nutrients right out of your body. So save your money because if you're drinking soda, those vitamins will not completely protect you since they will be flushed right out.

Soda contains not only food coloring, but preservatives and many, many other chemicals that have proven to have extremely detrimental effects on your body. A can of soda contains 8 tsp of sugar - add that into the average 12-15 tsp of sugar that most people consume through the foods, juices, coffee drinks they consume on a daily basis, and you have such sugar overload that it 's no surprise that people walk around not feeling well!

And for those who are drinking diet sodas - you're not off the hook, since it has been shown that diet soda consumption will cause your body to have further cravings for sugar.

What do I drink? Well certainly not soda. Instead I drink those 6-8 glasses of water daily. I drink the green teas and even have my coffee in the morning. I occasionally have a glass of red wine with dinner. You could try some of those low sodium tomato or vegetable juices.......but do not drink soda. For your continued health and well being, it is a very poor choice.
